The Courtyard Home
Set on a vast expanse of land, this bungalow is envisioned as a seamless dialogue between architecture and nature—where built form gently dissolves into landscape. Designed to be experienced as a serene retreat, the home blurs the boundaries between inside and outside, invoking a quiet yet immersive connection to its environment.
The spatial planning follows a fluid, inward-outward architectural language, centred around a landscaped courtyard that acts as the heart of the home. The Pooja room, anchored along the axis of this courtyard, opens directly into it—allowing light, breeze, and sanctity to converge in a contemplative spatial experience. This sacred spatial gesture anchors the spiritual core of the house.
The dining area, in contrast, is designed to extend outward, dissolving into the openness of the backyard. Large, sliding glazed doors frame expansive views of the landscap`e and the swimming pool beyond, transforming daily rituals into tranquil moments of pause and reflection. The transition from built to unbuilt is orchestrated through a careful layering of decks, stone pathways, and shaded verandahs.
Architecturally, the bungalow speaks a refined and earthy vocabulary—merging clean contemporary lines with tactile materials like locally-sourced stone, natural wood, lime-plastered walls, and clay roof tiles. Volumetrically, the structure is kept low and horizontally stretched, echoing the vastness of the site while maintaining a human-centric scale.
The landscape design is treated as an extension of the home’s architecture—composed of native plantations, water features, and shaded sit-outs that respond to seasonal shifts in light and wind. Every corner of the site is choreographed to reveal moments—whether it’s the morning light filtering into the bedrooms, the rustle of leaves in the courtyard, or the reflection of the sky on the pool.
Every minute detail—from the play of shadows through jaali screens to the alignment of built volumes with cardinal directions—has been carefully curated to evoke calm, spatial clarity, and belonging. The result is a home that doesn’t just sit on land, but grows from it—an expression of slow, mindful living rooted in nature.
